Vitamin Therapy For Autism & ADHD

Vitamin B6 is an “A” for the Brain for Children with ADHD and Autism

Ask The Doctor:

vitamin b6 for children with adhd and autismCan children with Autism and ADHD be cured with supplements of Vitamin B6 and Magnesium?

DR. SERLE:  Vitamin therapy for autism and ADHD is one of the most popular complementary and alternative medicine treatments, and many parents maintain that their autistic children show significant improvements in behavior because of it.

Vitamin B6 is the most studied nutrient among autistic children and is often given in combination with magnesium. It is very important that you supplement your autistic child’s diet with both vitamin B6 and magnesium because both elements work together in the body.

Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is a water-soluble nutrient that is part of the B vitamin family. B vitamins help support adrenal function, help calm and maintain a healthy nervous system, and are necessary for key metabolic processes.

Vitamin B6 acts as a coenzyme in the breakdown and utilization of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It is the master vitamin for numerous metabolic pathways in the body.  It helps in the production of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that allow brain and nerve cells to communicate with one another, ensuring that metabolic processes such as fat and protein metabolism run smoothly, and is important for immune system function.

It is also critical for the development of language, attention and alertness, which is directly systematic in individuals with Autism and ADHD.

Magnesium is an abundant mineral in the body. In fact, magnesium is necessary for more than 300 chemical reactions in the human body. It is a key mineral in human metabolism.

Research studies have shown that when magnesium in our diet is low, we have increased risk of depression, and this increased risk is likely related to problems with our NMDA receptors. A long history of published evidence demonstrating that treatment with magnesium can have anti-depressant effect—this was first published in 1921—suggests that low magnesium can actually cause depression.

Is there any research to back up this theory?

Dr. Serle: There are over 20 studies of vitamin B6 with Magnesium for autism, including 12 double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, making it one of most studied treatments for autism. Almost all of these studies found that 45-50% of children and adults with autism benefited from high-dose supplementation of vitamin B6 with magnesium.

How much does a child need of Vitamin B6 and Magnesium?

Dr. Serle:  Infants get 0.1 mg per day, children from 7 to 12 months get 0.3 mg; children between 1 and 3 years of age get 0.5 mg. Children from 4 to 8 years old should get 0.6 mg; from 9-13 years, 1 mg; teenage males 14-18 years old 1.0 mg per day, teenage females 4-18 years old 1.2 mg per day.

What foods can get vitamin B6 and Magnesium from?

Dr. Serle:  Vitamin B6, like many of the other B complex family of vitamins, can be found in potatoes, bananas, chicken, garbanzo beans, pork loins, roast beef, rainbow trout, spinach, tomato juice, avocados, salmon, tuna, lima beans and walnuts.

Magnesium rich foods include dark leafy greens, Nuts and Seeds, fish (Mackerel) beans/lentils, avocados, plain non-fat yogurt, bananas, dried fruit, and dark chocolate.

However, it may be difficult for children to want to eat these foods.  Supplement nutrition may be needed and liquid supplements are available.

Are there any risks associated with too much vitamin B6?

Dr. Serle:  Too much B6 can also cause over sensitivity to sunlight, which can lead to skin rashes and numbness, as well as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and increased liver function test results.

Are there tests to measure a child’s Vitamin B6?

Dr. Serle:  Yes, blood work and urine tests are done to determine deficiencies.
